My Lord, please do not punish me…

إلهي لا تعذبني فإني *** مقر بالذي قد كان مني
My Lord, punish me not, for I admit to my mistakes

فما لي حيلة إلا رجائي *** لعفوك فاحطط الأوزار عني
I don’t have anything but the hope in your forgiveness, so forgive my sins

ومالي حيلة إلا رجائي *** وعفوك إن عفوت وحسن ظني
And I don’t have anything, but the hope in your forgiveness if you forgive me, and my good expectation of you

فكم من زلة لي في البرايا *** وأنت علي ذو فضل ومن
For how many mistakes have I done, and you keep granting me graces

إذا فكرت في ندمي عليها *** عضضت أناملي وقرعت سني
When I remember what I have done, I bite my fingers and gourd my teeth

يظن الناس بي خيراً وإني *** لشر الناس إن لم تعف عني
People think good of me but I am the most worst of people, if you don’t forgive me

أجن بزهرة الدنيا جنوناً *** وأفني العمر فيها بالتمني
I am crazy about this dunya and waste my life in hoping and looking for its temptations

وبين يدي محتبس ثقيل *** كأني قد دعيت له كأني
And I have a heavy duty in my hand, its as I have been invited to it

ولو أني صدقت الزهد فيها *** قلبت لأهلها ظهر المجن
And If I was honest in my efforts, I would do the opposite (which is doing good deeds)
